Why Disaster Relief?
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. - Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
Disaster relief is mission and ministry. It is an opportunity fulfill our calling, share God's love, and share God's Word.
Why Houston?
Puerto Rico is not yet ready to host mission trips - there's simply not enough infrastructure and readiness to receive groups. Paoli Pres has a relationship with First Pres in Houston and they can accommodate multiple trips, which was our goal.
Many homes were under 4 feet of water. FEMA has removed the damage - the wet drywall, insulation, etc. That's all been taken away. Most homes need the drywall replaced and other flood-related repairs.
What will we do?
We envision two teams of 8-10 on each trip, and the on-the-ground partners say that a group that size can “do” one house in a week.
In the evenings, we'll either have dinner where we're staying or eat out. Bring your Bible for devotionals.
Who can go?
Anyone 18 and above can attend. Special skills are not required.
What skills do I need?
The only requirement is a desire to serve. That can be sitting with the homeowner, cooking for the team, and/or repairing homes.
Folks with drywall repair, plumbing, and electrical skills are desired. We also hope to have team members willing to shop and cook.
How much will it cost?
We're estimating $600-$800 for the trip (airfare, shared costs for rental vehicles, food, materials and/or tools). Each church is responsible for determining how it wishes to approach this cost, from asking the participant to pay the entire amount to having the church pay the entire amount, or anything in between.
What are the accommodations like?
Accommodations are unusually nice for a mission trip:) The First Presbyterian Church of Houston is making available a hotel-like facility that was donated to them.
Sounds great! How do I attend?
